He will continue to play a vital role behind the scenes and maintain his position as Honorary Life President, a role he has held since 2017.
Discussing his decision with the Standard, Sir Lenny Henry remarked, "I have decided this will be the last time I host Comic Relief on the night. Only because I have been doing it since the 90s - and I think it is time for someone else to take the reins."
He further elaborated, "It doesn’t mean I won’t do things for Comic Relief in the future, but I think it is time for someone else to host the night. It is the right thing to do, give someone else a chance."
Regarding potential successors, he mentioned names like Dave Chapelle, David Tennant, and Ncuti Gatwa, acknowledging the wealth of talent deserving of recognition. "There are so many people coming up that deserve our attention. There are a lot of people who could easily present Comic Relief," he added.
The launch of Comic Relief 2024 was officially announced on Wednesday, featuring a comedic sketch starring prominent presenters such as Alex Jones, Alison Hammond, and Davina McCall, alongside actor Dame Joan Collins, comedian Rosie Jones, and music mogul Simon Cowell.
Under the theme "Do Something Funny for Money," the stars enthusiastically responded to Sir Lenny's call to action, rallying to raise funds for Comic Relief on Red Nose Day, scheduled for March 15 this year.
On Wednesday, Sir Lenny Henry made an appearance at the London Palladium to promote a special comedy night organized in support of Comic Relief.
Titled "Comic Relief – Live at The London Palladium," the event is scheduled for Monday, February 26, featuring a lineup of comedians including Aisling Bea, Fatiha El-Ghorri, Joel Dommett, Mawaan Rizwan, Rosie Jones, and Sara Pascoe.
Sir Lenny expressed his excitement for the event, describing it as an extraordinary homage to the inaugural Comic Relief held 39 years ago. Encouraging Londoners to show their support, he emphasized the significance of their generosity.
Reflecting on the unwavering benevolence of the British public, Sir Lenny remarked, "You can’t bet against the British public and their generosity. People are facing terrible choices every day in this country and abroad, but people in this country have always asked - what can I do to help? That is what makes us great."
He highlighted the consistent willingness of individuals to extend a helping hand, particularly during initiatives like Comic Relief, Children in Need, and Sport Relief. "The fact that we still aim to help out people when we see that they are struggling, it gives me hope, actually," he concluded.
